Every year, hundreds of crocheter’s gather together in an online forum to crochet up my newest crochet pattern. I work all year to design and create a project that is not just fun to crochet, but will help challenge crocheter’s. My teaching and design style is simple, to create projects that inspire and educate.
Last year (2020) was one heck of a year and I was so excited to bring you all the Tunisian Delight Sampler Afghan!

For 2021, I wanted to do something a bit more in depth. So, I’m so excited to bring you the Spring Blossom Mandala!
Worked from the center out in a mandala style, this throw size afghan brings together everything I love about crochet. Texture, color, and a challenge. Every round is different and, with that, a whole lot to learn. This modern mandala is a crochet skill builder and who doesn’t want to up their crochet game while making a fun and functional afghan?!
With most blankets, you’re stuck making the same motif or working the same stitch again and again. Not with a mandala. We’ll work each round, learning new stitches along the way, keeping you on your toes and adding a ton of stitches to your tool box every week!
What does a Rohn Strong Crochet Along Look LIke?
Like most of my crochet alongs (CAL’s) the name of the game isn’t just about finishing the project. It’s about learning as much as you can along the way. So, what is a CAL? It’s simply when a bunch of us internet friends get together and crochet the same pattern at the same time! It’s all done virtually (aka online). We’ll have weekly assignments, and videos will be released each week to cover a few rounds. We’ll have support via Youtube, Instagram, and right here on my blog.
The Summer Blossom Mandala is the culmination of a lot of knowledge and technique. It features beginner stitches, easy stitches, and a few more challenging techniques. With that said, here is the deal, I designed this mandala to work for even the beginner crocheters, even if you’ve only crocheted a few projects, you can do this. The biggest skill you need is the ability to complete basic crochet stitches and be able to read a pattern.

This CAL will take place over 8 weeks beginning on July 18th.

Summer in North Carolina always involves a beach of some kind. I’m not even sure if it’s legally summer without the beach. This year, however, things are a bit different. We’re staying home more and being responsible SO, I thought why not bring the beach inside?
My Sand Dollar Afghan is the newest free crochet pattern in my Free Pattern Friday series! It’s so much fun to work and can you believe it’s just four rounds per motif. That’s it!
It’s a really easy crochet project to start and finish in just a couple of days. It’s made easier with one of my favorite yarns to crochet with, Color Made Easy from Lion Brand Yarn!
I’ve even curated a few different color ways that I think this afghan would look splendid in! The great thing about crochet afghans is that they are so easy to customize. With just a quick shift of colors you have something that looks beachy like my original sample or something that looks totally different!

Add a splash of handmade to your home decor with this quick to stitch afghan! Worked in just four rounds, the Sand Dollar Afghan is the perfect lacy touch to your summer decor.
Rnd 1: Working into 5th ch from hook (dc, ch 1) 7 times. Join to 3rd ch of beg ch-5 with a sl st. (8 dc and 8 ch-1 spaces)
Rnd 2: Sl st into next ch-1 sp, ch 3 (counts as a dc here and throughout), 2dc in same ch-1 sp, *ch 1, 3dc in next ch-1 sp; rep from * around. Join to beg ch-3 with a sl st. Fasten off A.
Rnd 3: With B, place a slip knot on crochet hook, insert hook into any ch-1 sp of center medallion, yo and draw up a loop, yarn over and pull through both stitches on hook (slip knot and loop), *ch 3, ([dc, ch 1] three times, dc) in next ch 1 space, ch 3, sc in next ch-1 sp; rep from * three times more ending last rep by joining with a sl st to first st worked. Fasten off B.
Rnd 4: With C, place a slip knot on crochet hook, insert hook into any ch-3 space to the right of a single crochet on Rnd 3, yo and draw up a loop, draw loop through slip knot to join, ch 3, 2dc in same ch-3 sp as join, ch 1, *3dc in next ch-3 sp, dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, (dc, ch 1, dc, ch 1, dc) in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, dc in next ch-1 sp**, 3 dc in next ch-3 sp, ch 1; rep from * three times, ending last rep at **, join to beg ch-3 with a sl st. Fasten Off.
Assembly
This afghan can be assembly in a number of ways. I’ve outlined some of my favorites below:
Mattress Stitch – the easiest method, by far, the mattress stitch requires only a tapestry needle and coordinating yarn. You’ll simply work the mattress stitch, joining rows and columns. This gives a nice, clean, and flexible join.
Slip Stitch or Single Crochet Seam – a favorite amongst crocheters, this seam is completed by slip stitching or single crocheting through both thicknesses of fabric to create a seam. While creating a super strong seam, it is also quite bulky.
Join As You Go – my preferred method, join as you go can be a bit tricky, so I’ve included it as a bonus to the online tutorial that accompanies this pattern. Simply head to www.youtube.com/rohnstrong and search for the Sanddollar Afghan Tutorial.
Finishing
After assembly, weave in all ends. Wash and lay flat to block.

A few months back I released one of my very favorite blanket designs, The Snowball Throw! It used tunisian double stitch to create a graphic and bold colorwork pattern with just three solid color yarns. To be honest, as soon as I finished that version…I couldn’t wait to see more of what this stitch could do!
The Tunisian Double Trouble Afghan is worked using just two colors of yarn, a variegated and a solid. By switching up the yarns and how we use them, we create an afghan that is as beautiful as it is easy to stitch.
I chose to use Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick and Quick! Why? Cause it’s my fav?! Why else! It’s gorgeously soft and readily available. Not to mention, it’s just the right price for a super bulky yarn.
This is WAY too complicated!
I know…it looks really complicated. That couldn’t be further from the truth. When I tell you this afghan is beginner friendly – I mean it.
The entire afghan is worked in one stitch. That’s it. Worked over and over and over. How do we get that gorgeous woven look?
We change the color on the Return Pass.
Now, if you’ve ever worked even a swatch of tunisian crochet, you know that there is always a forward pass and a return pass. I always say that the forward pass is when we leave home and the return pass is when we come back.
This affords up the perfect method of adding aa lot of color interest without any work at all. We simply grab our second color after working a forward pass and head back home with the new color. The next row is worked with the color we worked the return pass with! We switch the yarn on the return pass again and that’s it.
Can I customize it?
YES.
The best part of this afghan is that it is fully customizable. You’ll have to change your hook size but that’s about it! I go over this in the video in detail but here’s a quick overview:
Select two yarns, a solid and a variegated.
Choose a hook size that is recommended on the ball band. I know we usually go up a hook size with our tunisian crochet but not on this project. Tunisian double stitch is rather loose, so by choosing a hook size recommended on the ball band, we ensure the afghan won’t be too open.
Chain any number of stitches to the width you desire. This is where you can make the afghan fully customizable!

Pattern Notes:

FwdP: Working from right to left, *yarn over, insert hook in 2nd ch from hook, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through 2 loops on hook (Note: last loop of this stitch will remain on hook as you work across); repeat from * across row working into each chain. (66 loops on hook)
RetP: With Color B, Ch 1, (yarn over, pull through 2 loops on hook) until there is one loop left on hook.
Row 2
FwdP: With Color B, working from right to left, *yarn over, insert hook under next vertical bar, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through 2 loops on hook (Note: last loop of this stitch will remain on hook as you work across); repeat from * across row to last stitch, to work last stitch, yarn over, insert hook through stitch as if working a single crochet, pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through 2 loops on hook. (66 loops).
RetP: With Color A, ch 1, (yarn over, pull through 2 loops on hook) until there is one loop left on hook.
Row 3:

Rnd 1: With B, work 72 sc evenly spaced along each edge of block, placing 3 sc in each corner.
Rnd 2: With A, working in back loops only, sc in each st around, placing 3 sc in each corner.
Rnd 3: With B, work Rnd 2.
Fasten off. Weave in all ends.

Note: Take care to count the loops on your hook at this point.

Repeat Second and Third Stripe once more changing colors as in photo.
Top and Bottom Triangles (uses MC):
These triangles are not traditionally entrelec BUT they do square the block up which is needed for this afghan.
Row 1:
With RS facing, join yarn in upper right hand corner with a Sl st. Ch 1.
FwdP: Working into the tss on last row, 5Tss, draw up loop in next row end of next square.
RetP: Yarn over and draw through 2 loops across to last 3 loops, yarn over and draw through 3 loops.
Row 2:
FwdP: 4Tss, draw up loop in next row end.
RetP: Yarn over and draw through 2 loops across to last 3 loops, yarn over and draw through 3 loops.
Row 3:
FwdP: 3Tss, draw up loop in next row end.
RetP: Yarn over and draw through 2 loops across to last 3 loops, yarn over and draw through 3 loops.

From there we’ll move on and cover two beginner friendly stitches that build on what we’ve learned so far the Tunisian Knit Stitch and the Tunisian Reverse Stitch.

Tunisian Simple Stitch
Row 1
FwdP: Working from right to left, (insert hook under next vertical bar, yarn over and pull up a loop) across row to last stitch, to work last stitch, insert hook through stitch as if working a single crochet, pull up a loop. (28 loops)
RetP: Ch 1, (yarn over, pull through 2 loops on hook) until there is one loop left on hook.
Repeat Row 1 until Block measures 9 inches from beginning chain.
Final Row
Slip stitch in each stitch across as if you were working a tunisian simple stitch. After last slip stitch, ch 1.
Rnd 1: Work 25 sc evenly spaced along each edge of block, placing 3 sc in each corner. (112 sc)
Fasten off.

With Main Color, Ch 28
Foundation Row:

Slip stitch in each stitch across as if you were working a tunisian knit stitch. After last slip stitch, ch 1.
